Japan Garbage Separation Guide — The Rules That Will Save You From Your Neighbors (2026)

The 6 Main Categories (Your Starting Point)

Most municipalities use some version of these categories, but the specifics (what goes where, which day) vary by ward:

CategoryWhat Goes InCommon Mistakes
🔥 Burnable (燃えるゴミ)Food waste, paper, wood, cloth, leatherPlastic bags (some wards = burnable, others = recyclable)
🧊 Non-burnable (燃えないゴミ)Glass, metal, ceramics, small appliancesBroken dishes (wrap in paper, label 'キケン')
♻️ Plastic (プラスチック)Plastic bottles, containers, packagingDirty plastic (rinse first or it's burnable)
📦 Recyclable (資源ゴミ)Cardboard, newspapers, aluminum cans, PET bottlesPET caps (separate from bottles in most wards)
🛋️ Oversized (粗大ゴミ)Furniture, large items, appliancesCannot put out on regular days — must book pickup
🔋 Electronic/HazardousBatteries, fluorescent bulbs, spray cansSpray cans (must puncture and empty in some wards)

But here's the catch: Every ward has completely different rules. Minato Ward rules are not Shibuya Ward rules. Even neighboring wards differ. Never assume rules from one neighborhood apply elsewhere.

⚠️Improperly sorted bags get left on the curb with a rejection sticker — and your neighbors will know which unit did it. Repeated violations lead to landlord warnings, building complaints, and potential lease problems. Some municipalities impose fines for illegal dumping. Take it seriously from day one.

The Rules That Catch Foreigners

1. Timing is everything Put garbage out ONLY on your designated collection day, early morning between 6–8 AM. Never the night before — it attracts crows (yes, really) and violates collection rules. The truck arrives once, picks up, and leaves.

2. Every ward has a different schedule Monday might be burnable in your ward and recyclable in the next one over. There is no national schedule. You must learn YOUR specific ward's calendar.

3. Bags matter Many wards require designated garbage bags (sold at konbini or supermarkets, ¥300–500 per pack). Using the wrong bag = rejection. Some wards accept any transparent or semi-transparent bag.

4. Washing and sorting Recyclables must be clean. A PET bottle with soda residue gets rejected. Rinse containers, remove caps, peel labels (in wards that require it). Flatten cardboard boxes.

5. Community garbage points Most buildings and neighborhoods have a designated garbage spot (ゴミ捨て場). This is NOT a 24/7 dumpster. It's a spot that's only open during collection morning. Many areas rotate responsibility for monitoring and cleaning this spot among residents.

How to Find YOUR Rules (Do This Week One)

This is not optional. Do all four:

Visit your ward office (区役所) Ask for the English-language trash separation guide. Every major ward office has one. They'll also give you the collection calendar. This takes 10 minutes and saves months of guessing.

Check your lease document Most rental contracts include the garbage schedule and building-specific rules. If it's in Japanese, take a photo and use Google Lens to translate.

Ask your landlord or building manager They'll provide the schedule and category list, often in English if you're in a foreigner-friendly building. Some buildings post the schedule on the garbage collection point.

Watch your neighbors for one week Before throwing away anything major, observe what your neighbors put out on which days. This is the most reliable source of local rules.

💡Take a photo of the garbage schedule and pin it to your phone's home screen. Set weekly reminders for each collection day. This one habit prevents 90% of garbage problems.

Regional Differences That Trip People Up

These aren't edge cases — they're the norm:

The Oversized Garbage Process

When you need to dispose of furniture, appliances, or large items:

  1. Call or visit your ward's oversized garbage collection center (粗大ゴミ受付センター) — most have online booking now
  2. Pay in advance: Buy a 粗大ゴミ処理券 (disposal sticker) at a konbini — price varies by item size (¥200–2,800)
  3. Attach sticker to the item and place it at the designated spot on your scheduled date
  4. Timing: Usually takes 1–2 weeks from booking to pickup
ℹ️When moving out, start the oversized garbage process 2–3 weeks before your move date. Last-minute bookings are often unavailable.
